Healthy Hunger-Free Kids Act Recommendations 2012

foods in school

Congress passed The Healthy Hunger-Free Kids Act (2010, Congress), making it easier to offer healthier options for school lunchrooms. The USDA made some changes in the food that students are allowed to eat at school. The 2012 recommendations encourage healthier choices, such as lean meats and low fat dairy, and more vegetables and fruits. Students can now eat healthier lunchroom food thanks to these new rules.

Alternative C2

The federal government is looking at a new standard for school foods, but the Alternative C2 food would allow for greater flexibility and variety. Schools could offer sweetened frozen fruit parfaits, low-fat yogurt parfaits, and more. Alternative C2 foods supporter also mentions the benefits of reducing food wasted. More than a thousand people supported the plan in the comments. But is it worth taking this risk?

Alternative A2

The proposed rules include a provision that would allow schools to serve NSLP/SBP menu items exempt from competitive food standards. This change would allow schools to serve a range of competing items in addition to their regular menu, while still promoting limited-calorie, high-fiber diets. School food authorities would be allowed to make their own menu plans under the new legislation. The rules proposed include a provision that will allow schools to serve NSLP/SBP meals on the same day they are served to students.

Limiting sugars

Schools may be concerned about the added sugar content in their meals, but new school nutrition standards are making it harder for them to add sugar. Many schools have stopped selling flavored milk, which is one controversial way to use sugar in school food. However, many school districts are limiting flavored milk, opting instead for lower-fat nonflavored varieties. Schools must now list the added sugar in their food labels under the new rules.

Calorie limits

The Institute of Medicine published guidelines about calorie limits in school meal. The new guidelines were created to curb childhood obesity. It affects around 17% of American children. The new guidelines will require that foods at school be less than or equal to 500 calories, or 550 for kindergarteners through fifth grade, and 450 or 600 for students in grades nine to twelve. Although children will not be required to eat vegetables, school lunches should include a wide range of food groups including fruits and vegetables.

Get nutrient exemptions from fruits and vegetables

While school food has to meet certain nutritional standards, exemptions are allowed in some states for students with medical conditions. Students can only consume a certain amount at a given time. Schools can offer substitutions to students who cannot eat the recommended daily allowance of fruit or vegetables. Schools with the right eligibility can offer nutritionally comparable beverages such as fluid milk and juice. They must also serve a minimum of one serving per day. These beverages can have as many as 40 calories per eight ounces, but they must be free from sugars.

Fortification: Adding nutrients

Fortification of school foods can be a great way for adolescents to get more nutrients and improve their cognitive functioning. In developing countries, the diet of schoolchildren is often low in diversity, consisting mostly of plant-based foods. Research indicates that providing iron supplements to children improves academic performance. It may also have potential catch up effects on growth or development. Children in Uganda can get micronutrients from fortified school foods. This will help them reach the recommended daily allowance.
